Youth workshop: Music of the Humber

Rewilding Youth is staging a maritime-themed workshop on the Saturday of the Hull Folk and Maritime Festival (August 24, from 11am to 3pm).

Taking place in the Wykeland unit in Pier Street (pictured below), the session, aimed at children aged 10 to 16, will include a discussion of sea shanties, their uses, common themes and history.

Discussions will also feature hauling songs and how they were used, as well as the whaling history of Hull and how important the industry was to the city.

The workshop leaders will teach some sea shanties to the young people and sing them together, accompanied with instruments.

Working with the musicians, the young people will have the chance to write and perform their own shanty. They will discuss authentic themes and motifs that can be included and work these into the song.
